A cost-effective device and methodology to compute aquifer transmissivity and piezometry from free-flowing artesian wells

Abstract Artesian aquifers offer interesting opportunities for water supply by providing a low-vulnerability groundwater resource that is easily abstracted without any installation of pumps or power costs. However, hydraulic tests are challenging to perform, notably where the piezometric head above ground level with free-flowing wells not equipped valves and open years. This paper describes low-cost, easy reproduce adaptable device, artesian well device (FFAWD), which mainly designed set PVC tubes pressure probe valve. used perform on wells, measure aquifer compute its transmissivity. The practical use FFAWD described method proposed transmissivity from this data (free-flowing discharge increase measurements) adapted analytical solution, using Houpeurt-Pouchan method. Artefacts such as post-production effects, surge impact leaky identified avoid misinterpretation. was applied volcano-sedimentary plain Pasuruan (Indonesia). advantages limitations along interpretation methodology, also discussed.
